Baby boomers grew up in a time that was simpler and much less hectic than most people's lives are today. Many lived in one car households and had to depend on themselves to get to school and back home again. Walking and biking were the most common means of transportation for many. During this time the bikes that later became known as beach bicycles were very popular.

Most boomers can't help but look back on these earlier times with affection as their days in the working world begin to slow down. Many are looking forward to starting the next phase of their lives while they are still healthy and active. In many ways, the boomers and the bikes are coming full circle.

At one time these bikes were a part of the overall fabric of people's everyday lives. Paper boys rode them to deliver papers on their early morning routes. With their wide tires and comfortable seats, they made even the most strenuous jobs easier to do. Some young people were lucky enough to find themselves owner of specialty bikes outfitted with animated characters popular at the time.

As time went on, boomers become involved in their careers, their professional goals, and raising families with very little time left over for personal recreation. Lives became more completed and technical as many people struggled to become recognized and rewarded in their chosen occupations.

These bikes also had their own ups and downs. They came in direct competition with faster, sleeker models known as racing bikes. They struggled with the advent of more aggressive machines that drew their designs from the pop culture motorcycles of the time.

Beach bicycles were so named because people who lived on or near beaches continued to find them one of the most convenient ways to get around in those areas. Over time interest in collecting the vintage bikes grew as did an interest in recreational mountain biking. Enthusiasts of mountain cycling found that traditional bikes really didn't withstand the rigors of such rough territory. They eventually discovered that rebuilding the traditional machines with old beach cruiser parts created a much sturdier and more practical bike.

Beach bicycles and the baby boomers have much in common. They have gone from the simpler times of a half century ago through the more demanding eras of change and growth, back again to a more leisurely way of life. Through it all the boomers and the bikes are beginning to come full circle and represent a time when life was meant to be enjoyed to its fullest.
